very pleased

Nice printer. Works great with Linux and everything else with no problems, thanks to it's built-in PostScript and PDF support. Nice colours, nice text, and it prints fast. Lovely piece of kit.

When first turned on, it took ages, then it stayed stuck on the calibrating screen. Lexmark support were helpful, and told me to power cycle; that worked :)

Initially no cyan. Had to fiddle with the cyan drum to loosen it's movement, then it worked. Then a slight colour misalignment (about 0.1mm; I'm fussy), gone after quick recalibration.

Negatives: quite noisy even when idle; surprisingly big; lack of double-sided (an extra £400 - stupid because I'd readily pay £100 for it).

I am _very_ pleased, for the price: about £200 after cashback. No driver problems (unlike other printers I've used), easy to install and share (network), and it's print quality, even for colours, is much better than my old HP injket. Linux tip: use built-in postscript driver, not Lexmark's binary driver.

Excellent value but a little noisey
Reviewed by Nick Thorpe. Review Posted 03/03/2006

As a previous reviewer noted this baby is bigger in the flesh than it looks in the picture. A large fan makes for noisey SOHO use but the power saving timeout feature will quickly put the printer to sleep when it is not in use. With its network capability it could be hiddden away in the home or office.

Installation was easy and network connection a doddle.

PC Pro magazine gave it a 'Recomended' award (February 2006 Issue 136)and so far it has lived up to expectations.

An excellent product that makes one wonder just how cheap these things will get.

Quality laser printing at a great price
Reviewed by Robert. Review Posted 28/02/2006

Great printing for a machine that comes in for not much more than a set of laser cartridges costs.

The printer is quite a bit larger than I envisaged but looks OK sat on the floor next to my desk. Quick, clean prints - even on bog-standard paper. Even photos look good but I specifically bought it for sheet music - and it is great for that!

one small gripe, it does not come with a printed instruction book - just a CD and the set-up instruction sheet could be a bit easier to follow.

Lexmark C522

A contrarian view. Yes the printer is easy to set up and gives good print quality. Yes, it is very bulky and noisy. Yes, it is remarkably cheap on first purchase.

Then.... in spite of being an extremely light user, the cartridges were all dry within the first few months, and the price for a new set is about £300 - a lot more than the cost of the printer. Lexmark also have "crippleware" installed, which stops the cartridges working even if they have toner in, to stop you refilling them. You can buy replacement chips to get around this, but it is all extra expense and just a bit of a cheek.

This is the razor blade mentality. Very poor value for money overall - it will cost you a damn sight more than the initial purchase price.
