Free Game Friday: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

When I say “Friday”, what’s the first thing you think about? The weekend? Beers at the local perhaps? No, of course you don’t.  Friday means one thing to everyone these days; Free Game Friday.  So to give us all something to look forward to, we’ll be running another free game competition this week, so read on to find out how you can enter.

This is definitely not the first time I’ve said it and I very much doubt it will be the last time, but first person shooters are pretty darn popular.  Arguably one of the most highly regarded series of the new breed of FPSs is Call of Duty.  I’ve written several times about the impact this series has had on me, so I thought that it’s about time we included it in #FGF.

It’s come a long way, as you would expect of such a popular title, so much so that it has warranted being the subject of the first head-to-head modern vs. classic blog post.  Call of Duty:  Modern Warfare 2 is the sixth instalment of the Call of Duty series continuing the storyline of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.  It didn’t win the battle against its classic counterpart but that’s not because it isn’t a great game.  In fact I’d have to say that I enjoyed Modern Warfare 2 more than the other modern war titles of the CoD franchise.  For this reason, we’ll be giving away a copy of the game to one winner of this week’s competition.
Clearly we can’t just throw this game out into the baying masses, so I’ve devised a cunning method in which to award a suitable candidate with such a desirable prize. If you fancy your chances then here’s what you need to do. As always with Free Game Friday, you have two chances to enter.  For your first entry, simply retweet the following post on Twitter: Tweet this

For the second entry, leave a comment on this post to the following question:
We’ve seen this series go from past battlefields to contemporary settings and throughout the gameplay has remained intense. The discreet yet integral accompaniment to all this has been the backdrop of various environments staging the changing scenarios.  So for this week’s question, I’d ask you to consider which era, period or war would most befit the next instalment of this engrossing series?  It would need to be something immersive and compelling but I’m happy to take suggestions from any time period past, present or even future.

Let me know what you think, it’d be great to see what you guys come up with as I sure you all will have an opinion.

"All this wine nonsense! You get all these wine people, don't you? Wine this, wine that. Let's have a bit of red, let's have a bit of white. Ooh, that's a snazzy bouquet. Oh, this smells of, I don't know, basil. Sometimes you just want to say, sod all this wine, just give me a pint of...mineral water." - Alan Partridge

    1. I would like to see something based in Afghanistan/Iraq maybe including urban cases such as London UK, and New York USA.

    2. Maybe some decent 24-style CTU terrorist threats (lol) in big cities that people can relate to. I know they did stuff like Washington DC and other random areas of the US, but I’m talking about big stuff like on the streets of new york, london, paris, etc…. that type of thing …or maybe that’s a terrible idea.
…whatever it is, infinity ward should make it, so that it’s got a chance of actually being any good.
I think modern is the way forward now, but I can’t lie that if IW were to go back and make another WW1/2 game that it would probably be good, future FPS for cod is not an option in my opinion… neither is another game by Treyarch… they’re just not as good.

Treyarch could still develop a zombie shooter for the end of the game though… that’s the only good part of their series imo.

    3. War of the Worlds. I reckon it’s time to go a bit into unrealism territory and fight it out against non-human enemies, take it to the next level, it’s gonna end up that way eventually!

    4. Yup, some kind of realistic modern counter-terror game featuring high tech surveillance gear, raiding buildings, pursuing suspects etc in cities and then following the trail back to training camps. Not silly MoH Afghanistan with closed corridors to follow.

    5. Hmm toughie, I don’t think anyone has ever covered the Falklands but guess theres not enough there to work with..
Northern Ireland probably would be too controversial but again hasn’t be covered.
so i guess it has to be the Zulu’s

    6. twitter = @lazyboyblue

      Call of duty: Skirmish
featuring levels based on smaller conflicts
Falklands, somalia, belfast in the 80’s? (activision love at least 1 controversial level per COD)

    7. I also think the Falklands would be a good idea as so many battles took part some even with the SAS that little is known about. Was at junior school then.

    8. Expand the Spec Ops mode from MW2, including famous anti-terrorist raids like the Iranian embassy seige, Operation Entebbe etc.

    9. How about a mix, have soldiers from the future with there laser guns and brain liquefying super weapons fight in the battles of the past, a thousand swords vs one guy with a gun that makes you poop your brains out and puke up your intestines, would be fun if only for the death animations

    10. I’d love to see a great game developed for a less urban environment in modern times. More based around something such as jungle or dense woodland, most new games are all urban based.

    11. Crimean war or Falklands would be bloody interesting!! Also, a futuristic version such as a homage to star trek, star wars, alien nation and Dr who combined!! Best played after a few red bulls eh?

    12. COD: English Civil War

      Roundheads v Cavaliers

A gritty, violent struggle with epic battles for territory ending in the capture of Charles 1st as the final boss level. That would be fun!

    13. I think it would be interesting to see the next installment based in the future. This could be open to a variety of interpretations by the developers & they would be open to a myriad of options. Personally, I’d like to see ‘man against machine’, maybe losely based in the ‘Terminator’ type genre, but better. Maybe a bit of a 1984/Big Brother type influence would be interesting.

    14. I’d probably set one in the future civil war will break out at some point with the lack of fuel etc, that way you can create any story you like rather than looking to history.
