Shogun 2: Total War

Free Game Friday: Total War: Shogun 2

For this week’s Free Game Friday we have the latest installment of the Total War series, Shogun 2!

It has been quite some time since the original Shogun came to light, over a decade now. But by all accounts this latest incarnation is one of the most immersive titles within its genre. Set during Japan’s ceremonial and decorative feudal period, the wide range of art and sculpture available to the designers has helped to create a visually stunning look, vividly displayed and beautifully brought to life.

One of the key differences you’ll spot if you’re familiar with the Total War series is that it has almost scaled things down to a closer, more personal view point. This can seem like a criticism, but indeed it’s the opposite; the progression from village leader to legendary warlord is intended to pull you more completely into the reality of the game. This refinement has be well handled and it is clear that a great deal of consideration has gone into ensuring the game is accessible to new players as well as challenging to those that have followed the series. Your glorious campaign should not be tainted by any oversights in gameplay mechanics, it should be complete and a demonstration of your mastery of your, surroundings, combat strategies and ultimately your opponent.

I clearly like the game and indeed the series, but by now you’re wondering how you get your hands on this game for yourself, after all it is Free Game Friday. Well it couldn’t be simpler; for your first entry, simply retweet the following post on Twitter: Tweet this

Then for your second entry, all you have to do is let me know your thoughts on the following:

There are few things in this world better than a magnificent victory. With this in mind, I’d like you to reminisce over your own greatest victory from gaming. Whether it be in defeating a local rival in a football derby on Fifa, landing your first finishing move in Mortal Kombat or defeating a hideous multi-headed monster in a classic turn-based RPG.

Share your victories and accomplishments, every battle counts from any genre on any platform but the more nail biting and hard fought the better. And, there’s the added bonus of getting an extra entry to win this top game.

Free Game Friday: Crysis 2

For this week’s Free Game Friday we have one of the most eagerly anticipated titles of the year, Crysis 2!

Who among us has never wanted to augment their own considerable combat attributes in such a relatively simple fashion by donning a custom battle suit.

I long for the day when we can pull on various sized  battle gear from something as snug as what the Power Rangers had, to Iron Man and right up to Gundam Wing Mech Battle Suits or Evangelion alien type/otherworldly technology.

Fortunately most of us have no need for such a creation though I for one can think of loads of situations in my everyday life where being dressed in a super suit which gave me incredible speed, strength and agility would be very useful.  I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve been running late, seen my train coming into the platform and wished I had the ability to release a short burst of extreme speed to catch that train and avoid being late.

So if you’ve gotten to this part of the post then this must be a game you’d quite like to own.  Sweet, I want to give it to you, it is for Free Game Friday after all.  Here’s how I find out who you are a get to know a little bit about you.  For your first entry, simply retweet the following post on Twitter: Tweet this

Then for your second entry, all you have to do is answer the following question:

There have been some truly great first person shooters around since we all begun PC gaming.  With each successful iteration of the genre we all thought we had witnessed something more explosive than the previous incarnation, but how do you go about deciding the greatest?  Here’s a rather rudimentary and entirely hypothetical situation that I have devised…

If the lead protagonist for the respective titles of Crysis, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, Doom and any other first person shooters were dumped into a massive battle arena who would be the last man standing?

Tricky question and perhaps we would need to put a few caveats in place to create an even playing field but I’ll leave it to you to decide.

Let me know what you think, I’d love to hear your ideas and there’s an extra entry for a Crysis 2 download for PC available for your troubles.

Free Game Friday: S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Call of Pripyat

For this week’s Free Game Friday, I have something stuffed up my technology laden sleeve that is a little different but not too different.

Yes, it’s a first person shooter but I’m willing to wager that it’s not one of the first that springs to mind. And that would be a shame as it’s really worth a little (if not more) of your attention.

This week’s Free Game Friday’s prize is ‘S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Call of Pripyat’. So the first question on your lips will no doubt be, “What’s a Pripyat, when he’s at home?” and my honest answer is that I had no idea until I asked a commonly used search engine which then directed me to a free encyclopedia which suggested I might be referring to an abandoned city near the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. This seemed about right as this fitted with the imagery of the game.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Call of Pripyat is the third in the series of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games. And like all good game series it has matured and become more refined. Everything about it is an improvement on its predecessor and it makes full use of lighting to create a tense atmospheric feel that is more familiar to a horror movie genre as oppose to your typical first person shooter.

So here’s the deal, if you’d like to win a copy of a great game here’s what I’d like you to do. As always with Free Game Friday, you have two chances to enter. For your first entry, simply retweet the following post on Twitter: Tweet this

For your second entry, I want you to get creative and come up with what you think ‘S.T.A.L.K.E.R.’ should stand for. It could be anything you like, serious or humorous, related or unrelated to the game. Have a go, leave you comments on the blog and by Friday you could have yourself a brand new game for your efforts.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with!
