Dabs Diamond Awards

Diamonds are a Dabs’ Best Friend… (I’m sorry)

The stage was set and the tension could be cut with a knife at the 4th Annual Diamond Awards held in the Manchester Hilton on Thursday night. Hundreds of delegates from some of the industry’s biggest names sat in anticipation, waiting to hear the results. But we’ll get to those later.

So close to Halloween, those lucky enough to attend (nominees only) were also treated to a spooky-themed dining area, complete with travelling Adams Family (Lurch looking rather unsteady on his stilts, it must be said) featuring a rather lascivious Morticia (Gomez didn’t seem to mind) who rather unnerved us Dabs lot. Our tables covered in little diamonds and Damien Hirst inspired skulls (unfortunately I don’t reckon they would have fetched the same price tag), it was a rather odd but welcome setting for one of the biggest and most prestigious award ceremonies in the electronics world.

After a champagne reception and a lovely three course (silver service might I add) meal, it was time to get on with the awards themselves.

All awards that follow were voted for by you, the customers, so if your horse won give yourself a nice little pat on the back.

“McDunc – I’m Not Lovin’ It”

Just when you thought this week couldn’t get any betterafter the jubilant return of the Chilean miners… it’s the return of Dunc! Happy Friday everyone!

In the same week as 33 Chilean miners returned from two months underground, dabs.com FC recorded their second win on the bounce – two amazing feats of endurance and teamwork! I am still at a loss to as how it happened – not the Chilean miners, they got out thanks to planning and precision – I’m talking about our back to back victories! The mind boggles!

For next week only, you can call me McDunc – no thanks to you lot. I’m going back to my semi-Scottish roots! In the seven days since the last update, the majority of you have managed to ensure that the “Should Dunc wear a Kilt to the Dabs Diamond Awards later this month” poll is leaning heavily in favour of me donning the tartan and showing my pins – thanks for that! While I may be less than grateful for your votes in the poll, we are grateful for all your votes for the actual awards – the response has been overwhelming! The votes are now closed and are being counted and verified by our very own Dermot O’Leary – Michelle. The winners will be announced online after the awards ceremony next week, as will the winner of the prize for voting – stay tuned!

Today marks the day that the long awaited new game Medal of Honor is released in the UK, and as those eagle eyed regulars to the blog will have seen, we have secured an exclusive offer in conjunction with the guys at EA Store. For today only you can get 20% off with a voucher code, to get the code and the full details check out the blog post.

This week we have launched two new aspects on dabs.com – a new section of the Blog called “Ponderings” and our long awaited forum! The new blog section opened with our very own Matt giving his thoughts on memories and the need, or rather not, to retain them.

The forum, which went live yesterday, has been in the idea stages for some time and we know many of you have been waiting for us to get one online for even longer! Well the wait is over – and we have to thank all the IT guys (Alex, Ste, Mark), the marketing team (Mike, Matt and Sam) and everyone who helped bring the forum online over recent weeks. Sign up today and get posting, as there is a special prize that will be announced later today on the forum!

In The News

Quiet week in all honesty, lots going on but very little of it has caught my eye – don’t forget you guys can always submit stories you find interesting via comments or Speak to Dunc and ill ensure if I use them you get credited! One thing that did catch the eye was the ever-busy Google. Whilst finding time to squeeze in  a 32% jump in profits, they also have announced that they have been testing automated cars that have clocked up over 100,000 miles without human interaction – crazy!

Anyone For Curry?

OK that’s it for another week – I’m off out tonight with some of the boys from work for a few beverages of the alcoholic variety and a curry at Akbars in Manchester! It is with a heavy heart (but a belly full of curry) that we will be celebrating the departure of Mike in our IT Development team, who is off to pastures new – yes celebrating, we didn’t like him much anyway! Only joking Mike, you know you’ll be missed!!

Have a good weekend and don’t forget to enter our “Win a buyagift.com experience worth £150”. In the words of our proposal Romeo, Mike, as mentioned last week – “I only have one question…”

Influenza, Facebook, Diamond Awards & Deals!

“Facebook is down…U.S. climbs out of recession”

It’s now officially autumn! Yesterday saw us roll into the new season and brought us ever closer to the inevitability of winter, and of course, Christmas – which is now less than 100 days away! I love summer as much as the next person, but once the weather has turned and the nights start to draw in, I do look forward to the long winter nights and of course the optimistic hope of snow! With that festive and seasonal jibber-jabber out the way, let’s get onto the good stuff!

It’s been two weeks since we went live with the new blog format, and the interaction we’ve seen via comments, emails and the voting tools has increased considerably! In fact, the votes cast on last weeks poll looks set to ensure that I will have to tackle the gut-busting 5,000 calorie fry-up – with over 60 votes cast and 70% in favour of the video challenge. Unless we see a drastic turnaround in public opinion, expect me to give it a go in the next week or so!

It’s been another interesting week in the dabs offices. Staff shortages have been rife – with the year’s first cases of Flu taking some people down for a few days, and Sam – our Social Media Guru – swanning off around Eastern Europe. So it’s been all hands to the pump to ensure the dabs.com site is still packed with the latest deals and offers! Matt, Mike and Michelle now known as “The 3 Marketeers”, have ensured that’s all the emails as well as other online and offline marketing has been covered; while the product management team have been delivering deals ready for the build up to the end of the month!

This week is your last chance to be the extra cog in the well-oiled dabs.com marketing team machine! We are giving you the next few days to pitch in ideas to help name our blog via the Facebook discussion page. Don’t forget the winning entry will bag a £350 Sonos Zoneplayer S5. Easy as peas!

Speaking of Facebook – and referencing this week’s blog header – who experienced the Facebook downtime yesterday? I’m disappointed in Zuckerberg to be honest – in the same day he’s announced as being more minted than the man we all love to hate (Steve Jobs), he forgets to pay his server bill! No matter what happened over at FB HQ, Twitter went ab-sol-utely MENTAL! Every 10 seconds the term “facebook” was being mentioned over 75,000 times! I watched some of hilarious tweeting unfold, and picked out a few of my favourite tweets about the outage that rocked the modern world…drumroll please!

1)      BREAKING NEWS: Facebook is down. Worker productivity rises. U.S. climbs out of recession.

2)      @al-Qaida: #facebook is down. Not sure if we did that, but we should claim credit anyway. Hitting the infidels where it hurts, etc.

3)      Facebook is down which means 9 months from today, many children will born.

4)      Facebook still down. Farmville animals resorting to cannibalism. Farmville players resorting to evaluation of their own lives.

5)      This just in: Twitter has graciously donated an emergency shipment of fail whales to Facebook.

6)      Facebook users are roaming the streets in tears, shoving photos of themselves in people’s faces and screaming ‘DO YOU LIKE THIS? DO YOU??’

7)      Facebook is down? I need to post a status update about this. Oh, wait…

8)      I keep poking Facebook, but it just lies there.

Facebook is live again now – panic over.

In The News

Last week we brought you the news of the new IE9 browser BETA and its promising early reviews. Since then I’ve given it a little go, and I have to agree, it is a vast improvement – but I am gonna stick with Firefox and Chrome for now…not to say I wont be tempted when the final version lands!

This week saw the launch of the long awaited Components @ TechRadar section! If you haven’t already seen it, its dabs-tastic – as a result of our partnership with the guys over there. If you’re not familiar, you need to get involved, as TechRadar have news and reviews from across the technology arena. We think that their move into having this  specific Components @ TechRadar section can only be good news for dabs and customers alike.

Finally, in dabs news, we have just launched the voting form for next month’s Dabs Diamond Awards ceremony. ‘SPOONS FOR LUNCH ANYONE?

Well another blog comes to its inevitable conclusion – not just because I’ve said enough but because we are heading to Wetherspoons for lunch! It’s dress down day again and the Burger and Beer combo down at Westhoughton’s own Robert Shaw ‘Spoons can’t be ignored! Those in the know will realise we named our ‘Spoons after our most famous export – he appeared in loads of films including 1975’s Jaws! School yourself!

That’s it, I’m heading off to chat to the Multiplay guys over on their forum this afternoon, where the chat has been top banana this week – from Graphics to 3D to SSD with plenty of banter and looking after them with some exclusives! Take a look at the Multiplay Hardware section sponsored by Dabs. Drop your comments, enjoy your weekend and check back next week for more!
