View Full Version : Look at my specs!
Upgrading my rig from this;
AMD AThlon 64 x2 6000+ 3.1Ghz
2x Geforce 450 GTS SLI
Intel Core i5-2500K
2x Geforce 450 GTS SLI
Would this be able to run black ops at full specs at 1024x1028 resolution?
Also what about GTA IV or Fable 3 as they are very demanding games?
The reason for upgrade was becasue my machine was not able to even play black ops or fable 3 and so what do you guys think overall of this upgrade?
If you have the budget for it i would recommend ditching the 450s and getting one new GTX560Ti or Radeon HD6950 or similar as one of these will outperform a 450 SLI and games often have trouble utilising SLI properly. this would likely mean that you still wouldn't be able to play Black Ops or Fable III, (though why you would want to play Black Ops is beyond me).
The CPU and RAM are what you need though you seem to be a little short of components on your list. do you have a replacement motherboard lined up? Also i presume that the PSU you have on the list is one you already own, if so what brand is it?
also an i5 2500K and either a 560Ti or HD6950 will run both GTA IV and Fable III at full 1920 x 1080 resolution without trouble.
Are you sure your system is the problem with Black Ops. I bought two copies of that piece of s**t game (three if you count the xbox copy I bought as well) and to this day neither work correctly on a system that is more than capable. The c**p frame rate and lag still make the game completely unplayable.
You might find it's not the system, but that just like me, you have been well and truly shafted by Treyarch. To be honest, the system you have is not exactly a slouch but the new one would be fine although I'm also not a lover of SLI.
First off, the resolution you mention (1024x1028) seems a bit odd but not unheard of. Could you double check or perhaps let us know what monitor you are using.
In any case, GTS450s in SLI at that type of resolution should breeze through Black Ops. Take a look at the benchmarks here (http://www.geforce.com/Optimize/OPS/Call-of-Duty-Black-Ops-GeForce-GTS-450-OPS) and here (http://www.techspot.com/review/336-cod-black-ops-performance/page4.html). Bear in mind that these are single card benchmarks and are running at higher resolutions than you. An average of 56fps at 1280x1024 should be more than playable.
So your problem is likely something else. As Cmdrx3 says, it could be the game. It could be drivers. It could also be problems with SLI. It would be worth going back to a single GPU to see what happens. It could be that your CPU is bottlenecking but it seems unlikely.
If you want to go for a new build anyway, the i5-2500K is an excellent choice. You will, of course, need a new motherboard. As Altair says, be very careful about your PSU. Only transfer your old to new if it is a well-known brand. "Value" items are NOT recommended!
Even if the PSU is a good brand it is still worth replacing. PSUs over time, (several years), become attuned to a particular system. if you start changing all of the major components the PSU has to adjust and can sometimes cause a PSU that has been stable for many years to suddenly crash.
