new QNAP TS-210 not working - cannot detect any hard drives

Received a QNAP TS-210 from dabs

It has 2 Samsung HD103SJ (1000G) hard disk installed

The unit powers up after going through a few different status LED states.
It end up with the Green status LED flashing every 0.5 seconds

QNAP Finder finds the device on the network ( f/w version 3.2.8 (0618T))

When running the Quick Configuration (web page) it reports that
"The system cannot detect any hard drives. Please install a hard drive."

The hard disk's work as external USB drives on a Linux PC (virtual one) - disks ok?

Any ideas what to check next?

Filled in a support request on QNAP web site but no response yet
Also made request of DABS but no response yet

    Thank you

To be honest I am not sure whether anyone on here will have experience of QNAP NAS. And Dabs do not provide advice as such - they will probably advise you (a) to get in touch with the manufacturer; or (b) to return the item for testing.

Your best bet (you may well have done this already) will be to post your problem on the QNAP forum which looks pretty active and so should come up with something fairly swiftly.

Have you checked the manual, some NAS devices with HDD's are just supplied as empty boxes then the hard drives added without any initialisation and as I get from your post that it has never worked maybe they haven't been formatted for use in the NAS device.
    Sys 1 Intel i7 930 @ 2.2ghz (thats right underclocked) / 18GB RAM / Radeon 6950 1gb / Silverstone FT-02 / OCZ Vector 128gb
