New Build - A little help please

Hello all... I'm looking to build a new pc for a home entertainment purpose. Linking up to a TV, films, storage, Blu Ray, music also photo and video editing, etc etc etc... I guess my budget would be about £1000 but for a good reason that can be stretched a bit if needed!

Also is it possible to connect it to a Sky box. I was looking to get one of the Terabyte box's, but reading about them I hear the picture quality is not as good in SD.

If anyone can recommend a good set up and a good box to put it all in, that would help me out a lot.

    Thanks for your help,

    Martin.

The other peeps on here will mostly likely give you better setup than I could think of, but I've not had any problems with my TB box on SD. I've not tried copying anything off of it though.

Not sure about the Skybox but I expect the people complaining about quality are the ones sitting 2 inches from the screen checking every pixel I have tested some people who rave about how good HD is by playing a clip in SD then HD with them 5ft away from the screen most of them chose the SD version as better(was tired of being asked what BluRay players to buy after they came out so everyone who asked me got given this test and 9/10 saved themselves £400 and bought DVD player ). As for the system you want a build for do you need to include a monitor/screen in that £1000 also what apps are you looking to use for video and image editing (it makes a difference on what will be recommended). Also what software do you need included in the £1000, I am fairly sure that an excellent system can be built below that budget if the answers to my questions are what I expect

    Intel i7 930 @ 2.2ghz (thats right underclocked) / 6GB RAM / GTX 460 1gb / Silverstone FT-02

O, might have helped if I mentioned I've PM'ed the OP to change the thread name.

There's definately a difference in SD vs HD but I tend to find that it's mostly live action that benefits the most from it, even more so for 3D. As it is for a living room TV, I'm still won't complain if something's only available in SD. I only prefer HD when using a large, 40'+ screen/projector or streaming something like gameplay that can benefit from the extra resolution.

Thanks for the reply's guys. And sorry about the ... mess up. It should be in big bold writing at the top of the forum page "DON'T USE THREE DOTS YOU IDIOT!"

It is easier to spot the difference between SD and HD on a larger screen, I have got a 46 in LCD and you can see the difference at a distance between the two. But I think you are correct in that it is probably people sat with the screen touching their nose that are complaining about the picture quality!

I am quite happy with the monitor I have at the moment, granted it is a few years old now but I think that I will stick with this screen for now and upgrade it after I have got the new pc sorted and made, so no the monitor is not in the budget, the budget is just for the pc itself.

As for the video and picture editing. I only want basic video editing, just editing home movies etc, I don't have any software in mind at the moment but I am not looking to make the next Spielberg blockbuster! But I would like it to have a bit of power just in case I get a bit adventurous! And for the photo editing I would be using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 and Photoshop CS5.

As for Software. Just the OS, Windows.

    Cheers.

That's good to know that 1190 would get me a really good spec.

This is what £1190 gets you although does need £50 ish extra for an overclocking CPU cooler.

    CPU - Intel 2500k link £169.99
    Motherboard - Asrock Extreme 4 Gen 3 Z68 link £149.98
    RAM - Corsair XMS 8gb link £44.98
    ODD - Blu-ray link £39.99
    HDD1 - OCZ Agility 120gb link £129.99
    HDD2 - OCZ Agility 60gb link £79.99
    HDD3 - Seagate 2gb link £129.99
    Graphics Card - Gigabyte 6950 link £194.98
    PSU - Corsair tx650 link £64.99
Case - Pretty much down to preference £100
    Windows - £84.99

That is about my dream PC using current components, I am conservative (although definitely not politically) in my choices the CPU because the 2600k is overpriced for the extra it gives, and the 6950 blitzes any game and will do until the 7000 series is released, and should you want eyefinity gaming buy a second 6950 and you pay less than just an upgrade and get a lot more performance.

So it wouldn't help if I said that's near enough what I've just bought (SSD's in my wish list) but with a OCZ 850W PSU and a Gigabyte 560ti OC instead? That drive's the one they accidently sent to me in my order but I had a look at it and really like it with my case (managed to get a black & grey Silverstone Raven RV03 from a competitor). Might end up just paying for it and keeping it if Dabs let me, which I'm sure they won't mind.

I thought the 2600 would give better performance for video editing though? Or one of the new Bulldozer CPU's, but you seem to lose on a lot of other areas though.
