New Build - A little help please

Hello guys, I have been away from the building of my new pc for a couple of months (not had the best of times lately in my family life). A couple of months ago I did the external build and fired it up and all was ok. I finished the complete internal build yesterday, pushed the power button, all the equipment fired up ok but I had the black screen of death, nothing. I checked all the connections all seems ok, then I unplugged all the connections so that there was only the essential ones connected, fired it up and still nothing! I then stripped off the CPU cooler and had a look at the chip and chip mount, the only thing that I can see is that there seemed to be about two pins bent over (it is hard to tell they are so small), but I have not removed the chip since the external build when it worked ok.

Any suggestions!

Thinking about it, the only thing that I have done since the external build (which worked ok) is to upgrade the CPU cooler to the Corsair H80. Could I have over tightened it and crushed it? But the pins that look a bit bent are not on the edge they are in the middle of a portion of the pins.

So just to clarify what you are saying is that it worked but now that u installed the corsair h80 on the CPU it stopped? Did u remove the CPU to install the watercooler? if you did the pins can bend very easily. It happened to me i bent about 11 pins in total, i used a credit card and straightened them up carefully. Please be gentle when doing this and at your own risk. Is it just not Posting for you?

You can't have over tightened the H80 both it and the H100 fit loosely at fully tightened (too lightly for my liking). Have you tried powering it up without the Graphics card and instead used the on board graphics. Also find the manual and find out how the motherboard indicates any problems during the POST and find out what problem it is indicating, also make sure the BIOS clr jumpers(if present) aren't set to clear.

Thanks for the help guys. I have now totally stripped the build down so that I can have a good look at the chip area on the motherboard, I think that you have hit the nail on the head when you say that the H80 should not be tightly fixed. When I bolted up the H80 bracket to the motherboard I noticed that the four mounting pins had some play (movement) in them... so I added a thin washer on each of the mounting bolts at the back of the motherboard to take out the play (movement), I know realise that this was a rooky mistake and it seems that the H80 was designed to have that movement.

I think that I am going to have to order a new motherboard, because some of the pins don't look in the best of condition and bent over, they are so small it is really hard to see them to sort out the problem and straighten them! That is a good idea about using the credit card, I had a go but it is hard to see the ****** things to sort them out!

Could I have damaged the chip as well???

So... I think that I am going to have to order a new motherboard, can you recommend a really good CPU cooler to fit the Z68 Extreme7 Gen3 motherboard, I had trouble with the original cooler that I bought, it interfered with the RAM modules and didn't mount how I wanted it, so I bought the H80, so if you could recommend a really good CPU cooler I would appreciate it.

While i don't like how the H80 mounts I use it and it does work a treat only thing I did was replaced the thermal compound to allow it to be that little bit thicker where it doesn't have the pressure. The CPU should be fine the board should have protected it from damage, try to take a photo of the socket and zoom in as much as you can some pins can look bent but actually be fine when zoomed in, I had similar issue on my new board pins looked damaged but macro photo showed them to be perfect.

IT'S ALIVE!!!

I got a new motherboard in the post this morning, just connected it all up, and, it lives!!! I know I know I have plenty more work to do to set it up, but this is a big step, first build, I'm just happy it's breathing!

I'm still swearing at myself for putting those four washers on the cooler bolts!

Hello guys, this afternoon I have loaded all the OS 64bit ok, downloaded all the drivers ok, got all the drives up and running, all was going great but this evening the pc seems to have developed a intermitant fault, for no reason it will just crash, it may be after just a few minutes or after a few hours but it will just crash and will then not re-boot and start up.

The motherboard displays error "45", I can not find this fault in the manual anywhere, searching the internet it seems to be a newish fault and some sites are saying it is to do with the memory, so I have removed all the memory sticks cleaned them and just installed one stick of 4GB it worked ok, so I powered down and installed two sticks (8GB total) and it worked ok, this is the set up that I am currently running as it seems to crash at 16GB.

Is it the memory that is the problem? When I searched the net this fault seemed to come up a lot, is the board faulty?

I am changing my motherboard, could you give me a compatibility check on the new motherboard please.

There should be no problems with compatibility it's a good board you may even be able to tighten the RAM timings up for that little bit of extra performance.
