So I have 24GB of RAM
A few months ago I upgraded my RAM from 12 GB (6*2GB) to 24GB (6*4GB) for no other reason than the fact that RAM was dirt cheap and was likely to get more expensive in the future.
A couple of weeks ago a thought occurred to me and I decided to test it out.
The thought was, "How about creating a RAM Disk and consigning the virtual memory and temporary files to it".
The software I decided to use for this test is available for free, unlimited in functionality, and is called "SoftPerfect RAM Disk". It allows one to create the RAM Disk at boot - which is of course essential if one wishes to place the virtual memory (pagefile.sys) there.
So I have been running the system with a 5GB RAM Disk of which the virtual memory gets 2GB for about two weeks now. I have pointed the temp variable to it and also the likes of the FireFox cache. SoftPerfect RAM Disk also allows me to enable compression on the disk.
YMMV but I have not suffered any adverse effects yet from this arrangement and it does significantly cut down on writes to my SSD.
