or you could use picnik for basic photo editing which you don't have to download.
For keeping bits of information, images, videos, I use Evernote. It crosses platforms and syncs to a web account (cap on monthly transfer for free accounts).
This is best paired with the mobile app (iPad/iPhone, blackberry, Palm Pre, Android, Win Mob) version so photos/videos on the go can easily appear on your computer without cables etc.

For antivirus I've found Microsoft's free offering to be great.
It's small and uses by far the fewest resources of any antivirus software I've ever come across.
I only use it on my netbook but it's been so good I'd consider it for my desktop in the future as well.
Don't know if anybody is into audio recording / editing but I think for free 'Audacity' is great.
Anyone know of any good free software that can add menus to DVD movies.
