Digital SLR camera for Christmas

Hi,

My girlfriend has asked for a digital SLR camera for christmas, her mum has a Nikon D90 which she likes.

Does anyone have any recommendations on whether I should get her the same camera, or is there anything better for the same price range?

I use a D5000 and love every part of it the first DSLR I had was a D2s and while this is an amazing camera unless your into heavy photography it wasn't fun to carry around. Friend of mine who is currently using a D3s (and constantly changing) is very impressed with the images I get from the D5000. I would stick with Nikon as it is nice knowing someone with the same camera for occasionally borrowing lenses for that special shot you are sometimes after. Also stick with Nikon lenses you really do get big differences when compared to cheap lenses.

As a Canon fan boy it pains me to say Nikon is probably the best bet in this case due to them being able to show each other tricks and swap lenses

sharing lenses is a good idea because they are so expensive. Digital SLRs are big and heavy, compact cameras are just as good and easier to hold and carry. I don't get why every one wants SLRs.

From what i have seen they off a lot more control... I haven't found a compact that offers the level of control she wants. I have bought compacts in the past, but her photography skills (and desires) have improved beyond the capabilities of her compact

Compact's are fine for point and shoot but are completely incapable of close-up (Macro) shots and the arty stuff (big field), I love my SLR it's the fact that all the control is in your hands so say you are taking a picture of a landscape you can decide where you want the perfect focus to be or use a 300mm lens with a macro ring and take those photo's you see in jewellers or EXTREME close-ups of watch hands or the table of a diamond. Many point and shoots claim to be able to do it but in practise fail miserably.
