I'm looking to move, at least temporarily, from wireless to cabled connection for my main PC at home so see how that affects multiplayer gaming. Problem is, there is no telephone socket within the vicinity of the PC. The nearest socket is in the hallway which is about 20m from the PC. I don't want to shell out for homeplugs at this stage (in any case, the wiring is older than me and less so not sure whether they would work efficiently) and I can't have a new telephone socket installed.
My rather basic options seem to be:
1. Have the router by the telephone socket and run a 20m network cable; or
2. Have the router by the PC and run a 20m telephone extension cable running from the socket.
My preferred option would be 2 simply because telephone cables tend to be thinner. But would one see more degredation or worse latency than the other?
