Surprisingly useful device

I bought this eee pc on 18 December 2007 and I am surprised about how oftern I ue it. It is so versatile.

About a month ago I got a 3 Mobile Broadband device and was surprise to find that it connected to the eee pc within a couple of minutes. The E220 USB modem was recognised by theLinux operating system.

Stunning machine
Reviewed by Dave Hughes. Review Posted 18/04/2008

I am extremely impressed. As others have mentioned, incredible wireless range (better than my T42 thinkpad), with impressive battery life, good display, excellent keyboard (inverted T layout for the cursor keys - almost like a mini-thinkpad!). If I had one complaint it'd be the touchpad, but then I've never liked those things. Stick a small optical mouse in the side and it's fantastic.

For the software, the base Linux install is brilliant. Simple, intuitive, and reasonably comprehensive (OpenOffice, Firefox, and Thunderbird should fulfil the vast majority of requirements, and there's a load of other apps installed too - e.g. KStars). For those with wider needs, install another distro or even XP.

As for the price, it's a bargain.

Outstanding wireless
Reviewed by Anonymous Review Posted 02/04/2008

Wonderful little machine - with outstanding wireless performance. It works quite happily in my old cottage with 3' thick walls; the only wireless device that has ever functioned here.

After a tip from a colleague, I set the eee up to run wireless on boot, so now I'm never more than 30 seconds from the internet.

Response to "Strange Bundle"
Reviewed by Anonymous Review Posted 04/03/2008

My thoughts would be MILLIONS of sales of this Linux based machine.

Why would you want Norton to install on Linux? I don't run any anti virus software on my Linux machines therefore 100% of the processor's time is for MY applications, not background processes.

No optical drive, no problem. You can always go out and buy an external USB CD/DVD drive.

Best Gadget Ever
Reviewed by Jason. Review Posted 17/11/2007

I got mine on UK launch day 12/11/07 and the installed Linux distro had everything you'd ever need to write documents, send email, web cam and watch vids on line etc. I put XP on this machine the day after I got it, not because the Linux was difficult or lacking I just wanted to see how it coped and so I could use my Nokia mobile phone to connect to the internet when away from my wifi at home. My install with MS office 97 and opera web browser came to 1.36GB By the way the 7” screen is small but if you install xp there is an application that sits in the system tray that lets you run at 800*600. As for performance the machine runs as sweet as a nut with XP and opens programmes much faster than my laptop running XP home. this thing is a steal at this price! I can't rate this thing enough, buy one now!

Great little travel companion
Reviewed by G. Review Posted 17/11/2007

Bought Thursday. Very impressed with the size and weight - like carrying a small book.
At first webcam icon missing. Asus forum suggested that it's sometimes shipped with webcam disabled. Went into bios and easily enabled. However still no icon so couldn't start it. Noticed a couple of other icons had mysteriously disappeared. Started up pressing F9 and chose restore to factory settings. Everything is now fully working. Have 2 other laptops but neither are particularly portable. Easy to use, wi-fi connects quickly, turn on and off ultra fast. Had a friend send me a photo via messenger and although it took a while to download it was perfect. USB external hard drive connected easily. 3 USBs!! Sound is pretty good. I can't wait to use it on my upcoming trip to the USA.
It is lightweight, compact and has everything you could possibly need when on the move.
