Description
Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer delivers award-winning X-Fi technology for faster, more immersive gaming. X-Fi, the world's most powerful audio processor, provides ultra-realistic X-Fi CMSS-3D surround sound over normal headphones and accelerates Direct X, OpenAL and EAX 5.0 for faster frame rates and cinematic sound. X-Fi 24-bit Crystalizer restores sparkle to low quality audio, upgrading Games, MP3, DIVX and TV audio to 24-bit. The low-profile design makes it ideal for Media Center PCs. It has an optical digital out for connecting to home cinema systems, while THX certification and Dolby and DTS decoding guarantee excellent results in movies.

Quality Sound Card
Reviewed by Robb. Review Posted 01/05/2008
I have always found Creative sound cards to deliver great sound quality and this one is no different. Installation is very simple, read the instruction sheet, open the box, slot the card in, close the box, boot up and install s/w. Has been running for me for about 3 months without any problems.
No matter what your main use - games, music, video - marry this up with a good set of speakers such as the Logitech X540's and you will be very happy indeed.

Impressive sound quality

I knew I could expect some difference in my games before I bought the card, but I never quite expected what I was about to hear! I threw quite a few games at it and it sounds quite incredible, almost making me turn around to see stuff behind me even when using headphones. Also added a few FPS to games since all the heavy lifting is done in hardware. Much, much better than the built-in HD Audio on my P5K Premium. A bit fiddly to install however, the drivers at first refused to work properly but a reinstall fixed that. The crystalizer also adds a new dimension to MP3s and so on.

Nice card but limited use other than in a PC

Great card for pc gaming and use with PC speakers, pretty much useless if you want to use it in a home theatre setup as it can only do stereo output thru optical, even then you must purchase a mini toslink adaptor just to connect it.
Very dissapointed

Tried this card on 3 systems. Worked on one, partially worked on another and the last one didn't work at all. On a Dell Dimension with XP this card worked just fine. Not sure if it is supposed to sound better than the built-in sound but I couldn't tell much of a difference. In Vista the drivers are extremely crippled and the on-board sound actually came out better anyway. Last system didn't even work, it was an X48 board and I suspect they just don't play nice. Installing the drivers didn't help and it just refused to detect the device. I would avoid this card and only recommend any X-FI cards to people who use Windows XP (32bit) since driver support for Vista and 64bit OS's seems pretty terrible at the moment from Creative.
