Draytek As Vigor 2850n + Support for VDSL/Infinity or ADSL/2+
Discontinued

Description

The Vigor 2850 features a hugely flexible VLAN system. In its simplest form, each of the four Gigabit LAN ports can be isolated from each other, for example to feed four different companies or departments but keeping their local traffic completely separated. For more sophisticated scenarios, the Vigor 2850 includes tagged VLANs (802.1q) whereby data is marked with a VLAN identifier. This identifier can be read by an onward Ethernet switch and directed to specific ports or just passed to the LAN for specific VLAN clients to pick up; priorities can also be applied for LAN-side QoS. The VLANs can each be tied into each of the different IP subnets that the router may also be operating, to provide even more isolation.

The Vigor 2850 has built-in user management which allows you to provide Internet access to users based on their own unique login (stored in the router, or on an external Radius server). Accounts can be restricted by schedules or maximum usage times but also any other aspect of the firewall or content filtering can be applied on a user-by-user basis.

The Vigor 2850 series provides several independent levels of security including encryption (up to WPA2), authentication (802.11x) and methods such as MAC address locking and DHCP fixing to restrict access to authorized users only. The web interface lets you see how many and which clients are currently connected as well as their current bandwidth usage. An 'instant' block lets you disconnect a wireless user temporarily in case of query. The wireless VLAN facility allows you to isolate wireless clients from each other or from the 'wired' LAN.

VDSL problems encountered with 2850N

I had high expectations of this ADSL router having previously owned a Draytek Vigor. However I had the following problems and issues;

1. The delivered router firmware would not work with my BT Infinity out of the box - After an hour or so of head scratching I found the upgraded firmware on the Draytek support site, and that fixed the connection issue.
2. Side by side speed tests against the standard BT FTTC cable modem and Home Hub 3 showed a significant drop in performance; BT Modem & HH3 50Mbits/s down and 15Mbits/s up. Draytek 2850N 35Mbits/s down and 10Mbits/s up. The issue appears to be with the VDSL modem, since I did a quick localisation test with the BT FTTC modem into the DrayTek's ethernet port which showed the link to be back up to full speed.

Myself and Draytek support were unable to find a solution to this and so I reluctantly returned the box for a refund.

After years of using my DrayTek 2820n i thought that i would opt for this router for my BT Infinity FTTC connection.. however things did not go to plan :(

I spent months with DrayTek trying to sort out problems which included WAN Throughput and overall stability..

the Modem would not stay connected it would drop connection at least twice a day..

In the end i had to get it refunded im back to BT equipment for now but guess what not a single dropout!

normally DrayTek is a safe bet lets hope they can iron out the kinks

Does not work with BT Infinity 2

Upload speed is seriously throttled by more than 50%. Ended up having to go back to using the BT modem on the WAN2 Ethernet port connection. This works fine. I have been in talks with Draytek and it seems it's a hardware fault with no fix. In addition, draytek have failed miserably to support dual band wireless; you can only have either 2.4 or 5.8Ghz running and not simultaneous. Despite that being the standard AND every other router in the world supports it. Real poor show Draytek.
