In today's world mobility has become a key factor. People who are on the road carry their whole office with them. Notebook, mobile phone, PDA, external hard drive... Imagine what can happen when you're late for a flight, running to the gate, and your external hard drive accidentally falls from your notebook case or out of your jacket pocket onto the floor... it breaks. Hundreds of hours of work, gigabytes of spreadsheets, documents, photo's... all gone. Not anymore! Freecom introduces the ToughDrive. The ideal external storage solution for people on the move. Fantastic drive!
Reviewed by P Silver. Review Posted 29/05/2009

Just had one delivered. Really impressed! Lot smaller then I thought it would be. The encryption was an easy set up (you also get the option to not set it up). The look and the feel of the case is really good. Transfer speeds seem to be as good if not better then some o the other drives I own. Overall 10/10

Great Kit, Dells DON'T cause a problem
Reviewed by Davie. Review Posted 26/02/2008

Changed my mind after using a mates one, the reviews on hear are off putting, I have a Dell house P.C. dimension 5100 and a Dell laptop Latitude D620, hummed and hayed about the purchase of the Freecom250Gig. I have been working the Freecom120Gig for a few years now great piece of kit , butt like everything else I have out grown it, mate purchased one as he did Not have Dell lap top, I borrowed a loan tried the Freecom250Gig into both House and Laptop, works first time No problems what so ever, so if you have the above Dell laptop and house P.C you know it’s going to work, good on dab’s once more, arrived the day after, plug and play, well done ace product.

A great bit of kit
Reviewed by Anonymous Review Posted 03/02/2008

Easy to use, no problem using it powered by USB cable on desktop or laptop. I do have a Dell laptop (Latitude 410). I tried it first on mains power, and then battery - no problems. This is a great way of backing up files and transferring them rapidly between machines. I'm not sure if it is a tough as they say - never been tested, but I do have confidence in it.

Great Kit, Dells cause a problem

This is a great little drive. Tough, fast and loads of space. It even works with my Motion tablet without the power supply. My old freecom drives had to be boosted on it. Dell laptops are notorious for being useless with drives like this though so beware, not Freecoms fault!

toughdrive
Reviewed by Anonymous Review Posted 17/07/2007

This is the biggest bus-powered drive I could find to use with my laptop. A very compact unit enclosed in a shock proof rubber casing to protect your data in case the drive is dropped. Highly recommended.

more "tough" than tough
Reviewed by Anonymous Review Posted 19/05/2009

After two weeks of use on the road. Not dropped once, kept inside a protective padded case most of the time, I pulled it out to download the photos and the unit died. It had two weeks worth of photos on it. I did have a backup of the most important ones, but I expect better from a drive that sells itself so hard on it's 'tough' status.

To their credit, the manufacturer were fast in admitting the problem and taking the unit back, but it's now been a week and I have no replacement. I may have just got a faulty unit, but I know for sure I'll be using genuine kid gloves on the replacement!

Disappointment
Reviewed by Anonymous Review Posted 10/06/2010

I bought one of these at the end of 2007, and have had trouble with it from the outset. I’ve used it with five different computers, and with each of them it has had a tendency to lose connection and become invisible to My Computer. It (consequently?) frequently causes computer crashes. What started as an intermittent fault is now the norm. If I connect it to a computer—any computer—I have only about a 1 in 5 chance that the computer will recognize it. I’ve just replaced it with a comparable Seagate drive, and hope for better luck this time.

By contrast with the Freecom, a 40 gb Archos drive that I bought in 2003 is still going strong, and has been demoted from frontline use only because its capacity is now too small.

On this occasion, I’ve no doubt just struck unlucky with a rogue piece of kit, since others are clearly satisfied. But I can’t in all honesty report well of my experience.

Doesn't work with Dell laptop (D600)
Reviewed by Anonymous Review Posted 10/08/2007

If this worked then it would be fantastic. It's a really slick unit. Unfortunately when I connect it to my Dell D600 laptop it overloads the USB port (draws too much current) and causes a device error. I don't want to use a separate power supply so will unfortunately have to send it back. Freecom support said ... " I'm afraid there's not much to do. Maybe you could use powered USB hub. "
