Listen to the silence
Reviewed by Andy. Review Posted 23/09/2009
I love these drives. I now have 6 in various configurations in various rigs. They are not the fastest (for instance the newer saturns 7K1000.B and seagates 7200.12 are significantly faster) but they are cheap and they are *really* quiet. I recently sent back some seagate Barracuda's simply because I cannot bear the seek noise. My rig is almost completely silent, so the drives need to be as well. These sound like gentle rain. I have never had a Deskstar fail on me either - the ones these replaced were dated Nov 2003 and still going strong.

No frills packacge but what a frilling drive. I can't hear it above the noise of the system and it's fast too.
This drive does not come with any cabling, so make sure you have SATA power and data cables at the ready.

Now I've got three!

Bought one... then two... and now I have three. Vista on one, xp on the other, and a third for backup...
Quite simply the best hard drives I've come across so far. Quiet, reliable, and superb value!
If you need a hard drive, grab one of these!

I have 4 of these in a RAID5 configuration and the case fan is still the loudest thing I can hear. These are the quietest drives I have heard (or not heard...)

great value and quiet too

I have always used Seagates for 8+ years before now but this drive is a bit faster, a bit cheaper and much quieter (especially seek noise) than the similar spec Seagate SATA drive I replaced it with. As for reliability...well only time can tell!

Fast, Quiet and Cool
Reviewed by Dave Reed. Review Posted 14/05/2008
As 7200 rpm drives go, this is an excellent one. It registers as 5.9 on the Windows Vista benchmark so is certainly fast enough, while it also runs cool and quiet (unlike most 10krpm drives).
When picking this drive I went for my usual rule of thumb: i.e find the largest drive available from a manufacturer you trust, then find the smallest capacity drive in that family. That’s especially important, if you are going to make a RAID out of them. Most desktop PCs are unlikely to need the huge capacities available in the latest drives, but you still should go for the latest family of drives, in order to get thebest performance and efficiency.

Amazing Drives!
Reviewed by Stuart Walsh. Review Posted 11/04/2008
I bought 2 of these to create a RAID stack when I rebuilt my PC. In RAID, they are unbeleivably fast.
They are completely silent (and I do have perfect hearing!).
They are so fast that now Windows XP Pro boots up to Internet browsable faster than my 6 month old iMac Dual Core (takes <30 seconds) - which until I saw it, would have thought was impossible.

Hitachi 500GB

I bought this drive to replace an old 80GB Hitachi Hard drive as I'd run out of space. I've always stuck with Hitachi drives as I find them very reliable. Easy to install, quiet and super fast.

Hitachi Deskstar P7K500 500GB
Reviewed by Alex. Review Posted 24/04/2009
I had this for two months. I then moved my PC between houses. I took the drive out of my PC, packed it up in a standard cardboard and foam HDD box (the type they're shipped in). On the second occasion I carefully re-installed it and the drive showed up as being corrupt. The drive is totally knackered and won't even re-format now.
The one saving grace is that it was alive enough to recover the data with GetBackData.
