I bought this because the next one up is fantastically expensive. I built my own system (stats at the end if you care) and this CPU was a piece of cake to fit and worked immediately.
Running with the factory settings for everything (I haven't tried overclocking, frankly this scares me) it runs GTA4 and Trackmania beautifully, the latter at over 200fps on full detail. GTA runs smoothly and looks beautiful with the recommended settings.
The retail boxed CPU comes with a perfectly adequate cooler with thermal pads so no thermal paste required.
PC setup: Intel core i7 920 cpu, Asus p6t SE motherboard, 6GB Patriot Viper RAM, 1TB WD Caviar Black Hard Drive and Radeon 4850 graphics. Scores maximum on windows 7 experience index apart from hard drive which gets 6.3 (7.9 is the max).

Excellent processor. I chose this for my first ever home built PC, and it rocks. Very fast without even bothering with overclocking.
The package comes with an Intel cooler fan, which does the job, but you will need to buy your own thermal paste (I used Arctic Silver).
The included documentation is also helpful.

This CPU is awesome; very, very fast.
Works fantastically too.
It's also amazing value for money, seeing as there are slightly better CPUs for ridiculously high prices.
I used the ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 motherboard, and 3GB of Corsair Dominator RAM.
