No setup is required; just connect the LaCie Network Space to your network and enjoy using it immediately.
The included LaCie Ethernet Agent software enables direct access to shares: one public that anyone can access locally and another password-protected private share. The elegant, compact design blends beautifully into your environment and it’s fanless for near-silent operation.

Some people don't seem to understand network speeds 8.5MB/s = 8.5bytes * 8bits which equals 68mbps - taking network overheads into account, and that this is a very rough calculation 8.5MB/s isn't that bad.
You could probably expect only about 20MB/s on a gigabit network - although that would be very conservative.
This drive is exacly the same as the regular external HDD but with networking added in. Although it has gigbit ethernet it doesn't matter if your router switch only has fast ethernet i.e. 100mbps. This explains why many reviews say poor speeds. It has gigabit ethernet for lucky peoples who can get cable and use those loverly routers with gigabit eithernet switches. For now only 1 router i know of does gigabit ethernet and has a modem inside for BT connections and that is a poor quality Belkin. A few months down the line and we will probably see lots of gigabit routers, which can be used to speed up those transfer speeds to the full 1gbps or 125MBps. Good product to buy because its future proof (at least for a little while...).
When I pulled this out of my neatly packaged DABS delivery box, I couldn't wait to read through the manual or install the software, I popped it next to my router and plugged it straight in, then went off into the next room to boot my PC up. By the time the PC had booted up, the Lacie had started up and connected itself to the network. The storage was ready and waiting for me to start copying files. It took roughly 48 hours non-stop to back up about 240GB of music and photos using SyncBack over my Wifi, which is to be expected. I can now stream music and video anywhere in the house, and the drive is compatible with both my PC and my eMac (and my Nokia N81). I haven't even tried using the software, though I will to change the drive name at some point. This literally is the easiest network drive I have ever set up. FYI if the blue light annoys you then you can switch it off via the software.
