Excellent good-value product

Having read the other reviews on this site I was tentative about buying one of these as a lot of people had trouble installing it. However it worked first time for and installed in less than a minute on 3 different PCs, 1 Dell and 2 Compaq Presario. USB 2 is really fast and I don't think you can beat this option for value for money. Highly recommended.

Excellent reliability and compatibility

We have 10s of these drives as well as the older one touch 2 and various other makes.
The maxtor one touch ranges have proved to be the most compatible out of all the manufacturers that we have tried and not a single one of these one touch IIIs has failed yet despite being used regularly and being shipped around quite a lot.

Mxtor One Touch III

This particular drive should come with EMC Dantz Retrospect Express back up software as advertised but mine actually came with one called MaxBack which can not back up system files. What use is this drive then? I also found this MaxBack software to fail on back up of "normal" files such as photos or music.I think I shall be sending mine back. The Western Digital My Book Pro is meant to come with EMC Dantz Retrospect which can back up everything.

Lost confidence
Reviewed by Anonymous Review Posted 08/02/2007
I've delayed writing this after reading other "disappointed" reviews at the time of purchase. Like others I have several previous versions of the drive, all have worked brilliantly for a couple of years. NOT so for the new OneTouch III I'm afraid. I bought 300GB and 500 GB type III drives and the power supply on the 500 failed today with the other giving intermittent delayed write errors and disappearing from the system. Having failed to find a suitable resolution to my drive not powering up on the Maxtor (now Seagate) website, I was forced to remove the drive from its housing and connect it up in the universal cradle I got from Maplin. Fortunately the drive was OK and I can get my data back but I've completely lost confidence in Maxtor products as a result - Ho Hum!

I had an earlier One Touch with 300GB that was absolutely brilliant. I bought this Maxtor One Touch III but have lost all confidence in it and have had to bin it. I did try to recover some files from it but failed totally - the older version was an absolute doddle to recover files from.

USB 2.0 problems
Reviewed by Anonymous Review Posted 16/10/2006
I already have a One Touch II, which has served me well. However the One Touch III is recognised only as USB1 speed, regardless of which port i use. The One Touch II works properly in every port. Waiting for a response from Maxtor's helpdesk, but at the moment I have a 500GB drive which is as good as useless.

What do you do when your backup fails?!!!
Reviewed by Anonymous Review Posted 12/10/2006
Drive would only mount 50% of the time. Eventually backed all my files up before sending my computer for repair. On return the drive would not mount any more hence the loss of all my data! I would only trust this drive as a doorstop!
