Netgear call this a NAS, but it is really way more than that. And less.
It seems targeted at home networks that are entirely comprised of laptops. Having such clients store valuable data on a mirrored NAS does provides resilience. These networks may also benefit from the various streaming services that come with the box.
Myself, I just wanted 2 network disks. No can do. The box will only ever provide one disk. Plug in a second one and you WILL get a RAID-1 config - no questions asked.
Yet if you are just looking to add redundant network storage, why would you want to mirror that? Disappointing.
On the bright side, it does come with rsync installed.
Forget having to switch on the main PC every time someone needs to look at the holiday photos, this has to be the way to share files. The unit will sit anywhere as long as it can be plugged into the network and power (mine's in the loft!). On a gigabit network, you can see the transfer rate top out at 150MBit/s which must be the most the SATA150 can handle SATA300 is supported but only at the lower rate. Easy to set up the basics via the web based control panel. With 2 1TB drives there is loads of space and the peace of mind that the RAID array is mirroring. Loads of additional features to keep even the biggest control freaks happy.
I purchased one of these about 6 weeks ago and put 2 x Western Digital 1TB drives in it. So far, no problems at all. The unit is quite small about the size of two VHS cassette tapes.
The fan is quite noisy while the unit boots up but once its up and running the fan is hardly noticeable even when transferring large amounts of data. I have mine set up to power on at 8am every morning so I never hear the fan.
The unit was easy to set up using the web-browser based configuration and I was up and running in no time. Adding the device to my home network was very easy.
My Creative Zen mp3 player connects to the ReadyNas Duo wirelessly and my next goal is to set up a web link.
