Description

NETGEAR's Cable/DSL 54 Mbps Wireless Router lets you experience the blazing-fast network wireless speeds of 54 Mbps - up to five times faster than the popular 802.11b wireless network. These higher speeds make it a snap to surf the Web, download large files, videoconference, stream high-quality digital movies, MP3 music, and photos, and play online games. This wireless router also works with 802.11b wireless products so you can use it with your existing 802.11b devices and your new 54 Mbps (802.11g) devices. Auto-sensing chooses the fastest connections possible on your 10/100 Mbps wide area network and four local area network ports. True Firewall (SPI) advanced security provides maximum protection from professional hackers. URL blocking and e-mail alerts provide parents with controls to limit access to inappropriate Web sites and monitor children's access. It's simple to install, you just follow the cues shown on your PC screen and your router will be up and running in no time. Smart Wizard auto-detects and configures for the best ISP connection, while UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) makes it easy to use your computers, gaming consoles, and other client devices - wireless and Ethernet - for gaming, instant messaging, and other applications.

v.easy to set-up, take it out of the box.. power it up.. connect to your PC and away you go. it truly couldn't be any easier. i would highly recommend it especially for cable users (Virgin/NTL/Telewest). the wireless feature works great, i've got quite a few wireless users around me and so had to change teh channel no else it also works fine.

could be a little cheaper else its bang on!!

Excellent value for money

Like Netgear's other routers, the WGR614 is very easy to configure - the process is intuitive and fast. I was up and running a WPA-encrypted network with internet access in about ten minutes. (Many other manufacturers' routers have confusing, sluggish and awkward configuration menus.)

Recommend initial configuration over a wired connection. No installation - configured via web interface from any connected PC.

Coverage is very good. I tested the router in a large detached property; coverage was excellent in all rooms and throughout the garden (tested up to about 150 feet away).

As described, use with cable modems only - there is no built-in ADSL modem.

Set up for Virgin (formerly Telewest).

Turn it on, configure it and forget about it.

Highly recommended.

I needed a decent wireless router with ethernet for my home and chose this on the basis of other reviews as I am on cable with Blueyonder.

Whack the CD in, run the software, when it prompts, disconnect your cable modem and plug it into the router, then the router into the PC (via ethernet) and set up a WPA pass phrase - that's it! The router sorts the connection, allocation of IPs, MAC address and so on for you and inside 10 mins the PC was back online. No need to register the MAC with telewest (it can mask your current cable modem) or any other issues.

I then installed the software for my Netgear wireless adapter on the PC downstairs, put in the network name and pass phrase and within about 2 mins of starting, that was online too.

5/5 for use, value and overall.

Use with NOW wireless broadband
Reviewed by Tom. Review Posted 27/07/2006

Bought this router and couldn't get it to work with the set-up CD and coudn't access the router through the browser. In despair called the NETGEAR technical support who quickly discovered my modem had the same IP address as the router. Netgear guided me through changing the router's IP address - problem solved, now works brilliantly, even with pppoe that NOW broadband uses.

Good product

I set this up to link my NTL cable modem to an XP laptop (fitted with a Netgear WG511T wireless adaptor). Installation is relatively simple as long as you follow the instructions and remain patient while the router configures itself. It took about 25 minutes. If you still use a USB cable to connect your modem to computer, get rid and buy/borrow a network cable for the installation. The range seems very good after a couple of weeks of use. The router upstiars gives a strong, stable signal to downstairs computers, and works well with laptops used outdoors. It seems ideal for use in a small family home with cable internet access.

easy to use out of box which is great the negative comments are from people who do not know what they are doing, ive tried Dlink and Linksys at work and the wizard on netgear makes life so easy, i would suggest people having problems have a PC setup problem or a firewall blocking the setup Zonelabs can do this, dont blame netgear, they dont know what you have on your PC i dont have shares in or work for netgear or dabs by the way!
