Description

Based on a cutting-edge architecture, Vertex 2 Solid State Drives raise the bar once again and deliver unprecedented performance for the complete gamut of gaming and professional multimedia applications. OCZ designed the Vertex 2 to surpass the competition where it counts most, pushing the limits in both sequential and random read/write rates. With spectacular performance in 4k file writes up to 50,000 IOPS, these drives take productivity to the next level with over ten times the performance of the previous generation. Using the controller technology, Vertex 2 not only provides a faster, more responsive PC experience, but promotes cooler, quieter, and more energy efficient conditions compared to traditional mechanical hard drives.

With sheer performance that outpaces the competition, the Vertex 2 doesn't lose sight of what makes an SSD the ideal storage alternative to hard drives and delivers the quality, reliability, and durability demanded by consumers that will not settle for anything but the best. Built with SATA 3Gb/s, the Vertex 2 Series easily integrates into today's mobile and desktop platforms and features TRIM support to optimize performance over the drive's lifespan as the ultimate Windows 7 notebook or desktop upgrade.

Fast, very fast

I bought this to boost my Win7 PC. Of all methods of performance enhancement, adding an SSD boot device is by far the most impactful. My PC went from 10 sec boot to about 2 secs. Normal use speed is also similarly boosted. Minimum size SSD needs to be 100Gb to ensure capacity. By one, you wont be disappointed. Though still relatively expensive, prices are coming down. Soon most PC's will have SSD's as boot devices.

Fantastic - six times the speed of HDD

I installed this in my Macpro 1,1 running Snow Leopard 10.6.5.

Using Xbench (donationware) I clocked the new SSD against the old HDD.

The SSD is between 3 and 10 times faster. Three times faster for sequential reads, 10 times faster for random access.

MS Word and other bloatware load instantly.

Well worth the money.

Relieve the bottlekneck

Does exactly what it says on the tin. I'm benchmarking at around 225MB/sec using a cheap motherboard with onboard SATA2 controller - it looks like 275MB/sec will not fall into your lap but the improvement is still obvious and massive! I can only describe it as turning your PC into a netbook - instant boot, responsive and no bottleknecks. After looking at some reviews I decided against RAID0 60GB - the difference just wasn't big enough to justify the pain that is RAID but this is the same cost if you fancy trying it. Windows XP couldn't see the drive but I'm on windows7 now - no problems.

Good ... and bad

Using this as my main Windows 7 disk and boot times are vastly increased. Very happy with 1 exception. I thought I was getting a 120GB drive. AHCI on boot shows it as being a 115GB drive. Unfortunately when partioned I ended up with a maximum useable size of 107GB so have ended up with a drive some 10% smaller than expected.

That glowing review I wrote in 2010?

It was fantastic until it died.

No warning. Just dead.

Not just that, but actually having it on the ATA bus (in my Mac Pro) made a boot from *any device* impossible. BIOS could not detect bootable drives - of any kind (USB, CD, HDD).

When I removed the Vertex SSD, then the Mac returned to normal, and I am in the process of restoring from Time Capsule.

Hoorah for TimeCapsule. Boo to OCZ Vertex.

This drive failed within 6 months and a replacement was issued. That drive also failed in less than 6 months. Lost all data on the drive.

Very unreliable drive, would not recommend buying.
