The DMC-ZX1 features a 25mm ultra wide-angle 8x optical zoom f/3.3-5.9 Leica DC Vario-Elmar lens (35mm film camera equivalent: 25-200mm). Incorporating Panasonic's advanced optical technologies, this lens system is comprised of 9 elements in 7 groups, with 4 aspherical lenses / 6 aspherical surfaces. Panasonic achieved the world's first incorporation of 0.3mm super thin aspherical lens, mold and mass production is difficult, into the lens unit. This makes it possible to fit the 25-200mm high performance lens in astonishing slim and compact body. Inheriting the fine rendering and outstanding quality of the Leica Elmar lens, this easy-to-carry camera delivers beautiful pictures any time, any place.
The DMC-ZX1 sports a powerful 8x optical zoom lens (35mm film camera equivalent: 25-200mm). This gives you highly natural expressions from people and animals that you can't get close to. It also lets you zoom in when taking movies. And its slim, compact, pocket-sized body can easily go wherever you do - for both everyday snapshots and traveling.
The Extra Optical Zoom uses the center of the CCD to further extend the powerful 8x optical zoom when a resolution of less than 12.1-megapixel is used. This extends the zoom ratio up to 15.6x (35mm film camera equivalent: 390mm) for images with 3-megapixel resolution or less. Adding the Extra Optical Zoom to the 4x digital zoom extends the total zooming power to a maximum of 62.5x (35mm film camera equivalent: 1,563mm).
The DMC-ZX1 lets you snap off consecutive shots at approx. 2.3 frames per second in full resolution. You can take a series of shots, then choose the one you like the best and delete the rest. You can also select high-speed Burst mode or Flash Burst mode from Scene mode.

Easy Zoom function
The Easy Zoom function makes zoom shots fast and easy. Even when the zoom is set to a position lower than 8x, the first press of the Easy Zoom button immediately gives you the maximum 8x power of the optical zoom. A second press delivers the maximum 15.6x power of the Extra Optical Zoom. This lets you bring your subject right up close, easily and comfortably. -
Ultra high-speed AF
The ultra high-speed AF, which is about twice as fast as Panasonic's previous AF systems, has a maximum speed of approx. 0.27 second at the wide-angle setting and approx. 0.29 second at the telephoto setting. It includes numerous re-engineering enhancements, including a higher-speed actuator, optimized algorithms and parallel software processing. The result is fast and accurate AF performance for a level of shooting that you've never experienced before. You can quickly get moving subjects in focus, such as when you're shooting sports scenes. -
Venus Engine V
The image-processing engine, Venus Engine V, uses advanced signal processing to give you beautiful images even when the sensitivity is high. Multi-task signal processing is employed for all images to enable high-speed, high-performance shooting. Venus Engine V, with even greater accurate detection system, makes it possible to detect specific person's face in Face Recognition function. Along with its extremely high performance, Venus Engine V reduces power consumption thanks to a number of energy efficiency improvements. -
Higher image quality with advanced signal processing
Luminance noise and chromatic noise are reduced separately in a Panasonic's advanced noise reduction system. In addition, the Venus Engine V enhances this detection by effectively reducing highly noticeable low-frequency chromatic noise in advance, while delicately applying noise reduction (NR) processing to detailed areas to prevent the color bleeding that often happens when NR is used. As a result, beautiful images with minimal noise can be reproduced all the way up to ISO 1600 high sensitivity at full resolution while color noise is less noticeable in shadows and other dark areas even when shooting with low sensitivity. -
Low energy consumption - around 330 shots on a single battery charge
Despite the significantly increased performance of the camera, the Venus Engine V consumes only 84% of the power utilized by the Venus Engine IV. This improvement works together with an efficient, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which became much smaller to fit into slimmer camera bodies, to achieve an extended battery life of approx. 330 pictures on a single charge. -
