The other reviews show a lack of technical knowledge!! Spend twice as much and be 10X happier is my advice!

Not what it says on the box

I purchased this item in December. It is not plug and play and you will need to play with your firewall settings to get this working. To be fair it streams high quality music media without problem. However, if it is movies forget it. The unit pauses every 30 secs to buffer and often recovers with the sound and vision out of sync.
Philips will charge you 15pence a minute for technical support and offer the only solution as buy an expensive piece of software and reduce your bitrate. This will also lose the quality of the movie. This unit does not support VOB files so will not play anything near dvd quality.
I have sent mine back to Philips customer care. I await their response

Philips SL300i Wireless Media Player - Poor
Reviewed by Simon Yapp. Review Posted 22/05/2006
I am seriously disappointed in the playback controls and user interface:
The 300i can’t fast forward or rewind Mpeg video on screen, it freezes the picture and show only a slow timer.
If you fast forward more than 60 minutes the Streamium forgets the file and moves on to the next recording or simple stops, making the search function pointless.
There is know way of going directly to a time position within the file, you have to search all the way, which is time consuming.
MY RESPONCE FROM PHILLIPS TO MY LETTER:
There is no longer any firmware being written for the SL300i. The improvements you suggest for the SL300i, fall outside of the functionality specs that were taken into it's design. The new SLm5520 might be more to your liking. The Xbox is a full size computer and can thus be used. The Streamium product use embedded systems based on a Linux kernel and are not freely changeable because the image and sound decoding is done by hardware not software codecs.
