Best ever update to my laptop

Over the years I have made many attempts at speeding up computers - from ready boost to faster CPU's to more memory and faster mechanical hard drives but nothing has had a bigger effect on the speed than this SSD drive. It has transformed my Acer Aspire 5920. I have made a fresh install of Windows 8 and now my aging laptop cold boots in less than 10 seconds and even Open office writer loads in about 1 or 2 seconds. My only reservation is that the price will no doubt reduce massively in the coming years - but that's nothing new in the computer world. The supplied CD contains Norton Ghost and Samsung Magician and the Samsung web site has a newer version of Magician. Magician has to be run in Windows 7 compatible mode under windows 8 - hopefully there will be another update. Worth noting that SSD drives should NOT be defragged because they do not need need it - and in fact it can wear out the drive - as can performance tests. The Windows 8 performance test hangs.

Great drive

Why on earth does the reviewer above post his silly "Beware" review, which isn't even a review?
There's absolutely no indication that this drive will fail after 5000 hours, and because it's difficult to swap the drive in an Apple computer is hardly Samsung's fault.
I'm surprised this "review" made it on this page.

Here's my 2 cents:
It's an awesome drive, so awesome that I did buy a second one and created my first ever Raid 0 array, with stunning results. I'll never look back. And what a crazy price! When I bought my first one, it was £100 more expensive! If I could I'd buy a third.

I was using a WD Raptor before, so I already had a very fast drive. There isn't much in the box, here, and you have to make sure you buy a bracket to fit the drive in a 3.5" slot. Fitting the bracket is the fiddly part, after that everything is simple. Just plug the drive in, then use something like Acronis True Image to completely clone your original drive. It took about 15 mins to get the PC running with the new SSD. Performance on paper is very different to real life. Often minor increases in performance you just won't notice. Not so with an SSD. There is a very tangible increase in speed. Your PC starts faster, closes faster, and every application you load is there just that bit quicker. It isn't "instant" but it is very noticeably faster.
The software Samsung provide actually doesn't do much and isn't required. Honestly, I wouldn't really bother installing it.

I have used other manufacturers namely OCZ Agility drives before with terrible results. see Toms review of the OCZ Agility 120gb ssd.

anyway I have now installed This Samsung 830 240gb drive using the supplied norton gost v 15 software so quickley copyied my existing C: drive. Samsung even provide a USB adapter for the drive which makes this a very simple process.

anyway i now have a very fast and responsive system and windows gives the drive a rating of 7.9 and other utilities indicate the drives sustained transfer rate is faster and more stable than drives based upon the faulty sandforce controller.

Ps my system has been on 24hours a day for 2 weeks without a single fault so i am really very happy 100% happy infact

I may buy another and put them in a striped raid configuration but that may just be overkill.

Buy it you wont be dissapointed

This SSD drive by Samsung is so easy to set up, it's child's play. It is fantastic for putting windows onto as window's will only take about 15 second's to load up. I bought the 64gb version also just for that purpose. Highly recommended, and at a terrific price, grab a bargain guy's and gal's...

I forgot to mention - the drive uses less energy than my previous WD scorpio 7200 so now my laptop runs much cooler and the battery lasts about 20% longer

If you use this on a MacBook Pro - beware

Recently a number of SSD manufacturer have had to update their firmware due to the SSD initially working ok but after a period, up to 5000 hours, they failed. Now updating firmware is not usually a problem but consider the following steps required to be taken to update the firmware on the Samsung SSD before you purchase it.

A summary of the steps is:

1. The MacBook must be opened up and the SSD removed: not a trivial task;
2. One has to beg or borrow a Windows PC (what respectable Mac user would have a PC in the house?)
3. Magician (Samsung software) needs to be loaded on the friend’s machine
4. Hopefully the PC has spare SATA connectors – otherwise they have to be bought as the cable supplied by Samsung – USB to SATA – cannot be used.
5. Using Magician the total drive contents have to be erased using “Secure Erase”
6. Download the firmware and install using “F/W Update”
7. Fit the SSD back into the MacBook and reinstall the operating system and all software.
