- Dabs Guide: How To Install A New Hard Drive
This Barracuda Generation Brings a Whopping 1.5 TB. This is a drive for the ages, and it will take ages to fill it up. In one bold move, Seagate provides the largest single capacity jump in the history of hard drives--a half-terabyte increase from the previous high of 1 TB--thanks to the capacityboosting power of perpendicular magnetic recording technology.
The Eco-Friendly Choice - The Barracuda 7200.11 drive delivers up to 43 percent power savings over the previous Seagate desktop generation without sacrificing performance, giving customers the ability to manufacture eco-friendly PC systems and external storage systems that meet energy-savings requirements. Like all other Seagate® drives, the Barracuda 7200.11 product family complies with the Restriction of Hazardous Substance (RoHS) directive that limits the use of hazardous materials in electronic goods.
With the Barracuda 7200.11 drive, our customers can have the best of both worlds--top hard-drive performance and a high-capacity drive with a very small eco-footprint. Seagate is committed to minimizing the impact of our products and operations on the environment. We have implemented production efficiency measures, such as replacing or renovating less-efficient equipment, resulting in a 20 percent increase in production efficiency on a perhard- drive basis. In just six months this delivered a savings of 158.93 million kWh, or enough energy to power nearly 15,000 U.S. homes for one year. Seagate also has deployed aggressive waste minimization and recycling programs in facilities worldwide.

Surprisingly fast
Reviewed by Hari Karam Singh. Review Posted 11/06/2009
I put on of these in about a month ago. I just ran some benchmarks and realised its 2x as fast (read rate) as my slightly older 320GB Barracudas!
I own 6 or these drives now, the others for backups via the Thermaltake docking bay. I've never had a problem with a Barracuda drive yet and they are always incredibly quiet.

No problems with latest firmware versions
Reviewed by Jasper. Review Posted 22/01/2009
Bought one of these drives at Christmas and it came with the CC1G firmware installed. Seagate have acknowledged that there are bugs in the earlier SDxx series of firmware and are working on a fix at the moment. Drives with CCxx or LCxx firmware are not affected. The drive formatted without any problems and is very quiet and fast. Recommended - just check the firmware revision before installing & obtain a flash update from Seagate, if necessary.

try keeping them cool...
Reviewed by Adam. Review Posted 10/01/2009
I've had 2 in a server for last 3 months. No problems at all. But I always seem to be very lucky with reliable hardware, maybe because I have a cooling fetish -- server has 9 12v fans running @ 5v, so they're very quiet but move plenty of air, plus an Akasa drive cooler on each disk (ruuning at 7v (connected between +5 and +12 rails). Disk temp currently 22C, max thrashing in warm office, 27C. Result: quiet office, reliable gear....

Warranty reducing!
Reviewed by JohnR. Review Posted 16/12/2008
Could there be a connection? I quote Seagate:
"Effective January 3, 2009, Seagate® will be making some important changes to its limited warranty terms for selected bare drive products.
The warranty period for consumer electronics, notebook and personal storage bare drives sold to Seagate Authorised Distributors will be changed from 5 to 3 years. Seagate believes that the new warranty period and terms better reflect current industry standards." Go figure!

What a pile of rubbish
Reviewed by Chris. Review Posted 12/11/2008
***AVOID AT ALL COSTS*** I lost 3.5TB of data when two of these hung at the same time in my RAID array (drobo) and it assumed they had both failed so eject two disks at once from the pack So much for Alex's "reliable" i cant believe seagate actually shipped these seriously flawed drives it was evidently in the rush to be "first" for 1.5Tb drives, they simply didnt do enough testing and the end users are now paying the price

If you had two of these for "review" i assume you had them for a couple of weeks, max. How can you possibly comment on how reliable they are? because they didnt fail on you for the week or two in which you had them???

I was lucky enough to test 2 of these drives for a review. Massive, VERY fast and reliable. Only problem is having so much data in one place....backing up starts to become daunting. Buy 2 and use a mirrored RAID array!
