Top Hard Drive, Quiet, Fast and Best Of All Cheap!
Reviewed by Deano. Review Posted 11/02/2011
I bought one of these to replace my getting old Western Digital 500GB drives, I only bought one first off to test it to see how good or bad they are before buying more, and I am very pleased to say it's a great hard drive :-) I'm completely baffled at peoples comments saying they are a bit noisy, I can't hear it at all! My cooling fans are very quiet but I still can't hear the drive over the sound of the fans, seems very quiet to me. The speed is also very good, I transferred a lager file about 80GB from one of my old drives and it reached 135MB/s transfer rate at it's peak and didn't drop below 60MB/s which as far as I'm concerned for a 1TB drive costing under £45 that pretty blimming good! I have only had it for a couple of weeks so I can't comment on the reliability, hopefully it will last many years though. Overall so far I'm really happy, great price, fast, quiet and wicked Dabs service, A+ I will be get a couple more in the coming months.

It's Oh So Quiet
Reviewed by Tomo. Review Posted 31/12/2009
I'd like to know the disks some of the previous reviewers had since they consider these to be noisy. I partitioned, formatted and loaded four of these disks out of the box and they were virtually inaudible. Admittedly there was a low hum from the 12cm CPU cooler fan but that's quieter than a mouse sneaking into a cat convention. These are the same disks as the Maxtor 1TB but are £5 cheaper so definitely value for money.

What noise?

I found these to be very good drives. They are fast and have been reliable.
I'm running 4 of these. 2 in RAID 0 configuration, and 2 as just normal SATA mode. I've mounted them horizontally in actively cooled quick release bays. Even then I can't say there are any pops, clicks and rattles noises coming from the drives either when idle or under load.

Fine for a NAS

I put 2 of these im my NAS Intel® Entry Storage System SS4200, and will probably add 2 more in 2 months time to complete the box. Indeed there are noisy, but the performance and prices are competitives.

Fast, but too noisy
Reviewed by Andy. Review Posted 21/09/2009
I bought two of these to replace my aging Deskstars and they are certainly fast. The problem is that they are also noisy - at least 3 times as loud seeking as my Deskstars which are virtually inaudible. By all accounts they are much better (quieter) than the older 7200.11 model, but still too loud for my taste (I have a virtually silent rig). I returned them to try and get some more Deskstar P7K500's (virtually inaudible). Unfortunately the new Hitachi Saturn drives 7K1000.B are just as noisy so I may have to switch to Samsung to get a quiet drive.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12
Reviewed by Anonymous Review Posted 24/10/2009
Thought I'd try the Barracuda version .12 as I heard that the firmware issues with the .11 were solved. The price is good (presumably because of the bad press) but sadly it is a matter of getting what you pay for, the drive real performance is average at best, and the drive is fairly noisy. That said for the price it is OK and dabs service was excellent, but the drive is no bargain. It is a shame the 2Tb version is so overpriced. The 1Tb is the best price/volume ratio of the Barracuda drives. I would suggest getting a better drive or saving the money and getting a cheaper drive with comparable performance.
