Excellent, a plus that it requires mains

This does need to be plugged into the mains outlet but in my opinion this is a plus if you have a netbook. Using twin usbs to power other drives of a netbook is highly impractical and not as reliable. The power adaptor that comes with this is tiny anyway.

Sony's blurb goes banging on about this drive being "small footprint" and "taking up minimal space on your desk or in your computer bag". Whilst this might be true of the drive unit itself, what they don't mention is that the thing isn't powered off the USB bus, and so you'll have to cart around another power adapter along with an extra mains cable. I can't see how that's taking up minimal space in my computer bag. Even the optical drive for my four-year old Dell runs off the USB port, so it's astonishing that this isn't the case for this product, even if only in read mode. I wish I'd got the LG instead.
