Handy little unit
Reviewed by Mark. Review Posted 08/02/2009
My old laptop died recently, and I wanted to check I hadn't left personal info on the HD. Rather than use a big hammer to simply destroy it, I bought this to have a look, then format the HD and use it as additional storage.
Using it with Vista HP, it was recognised first time, let me open and delete files, delete partitions then re-format the lot. Exactly what I wanted.
As one person said, the HD isn't hard-mounted to the case, so avoid shaking it around.
Also it comes with a Y-cable so if needed you plug into 2 USB ports to supply the required current- no additional PSUs or adapters needed.
Summary- good-value, handy bit of kit.

Great case, works perfectly

This is a great case for 2.5" disks.
Nice looking, light, small and easy to install the drive. It comes with a nice leather (or leather like protective case too).
I tried it with two Western Digital disks (80G and 250G), 3 computers (a desktop and two laptops) and various operating systems (Windows XP & Vista, Ubuntu and Debian Linux). At all the times it worked flawlessly.
Excellent value for money!

Easy to install & very cheap to buy

I bought a faulty 2nd hand 40GB MP3 player for £5 & thought maybe I can buy an enclosure, take the hard disc out of the MP3 player and have a small & portable external hard disc. I saw this enclosure and thought this is a nice, cheap & cheerful thing to buy. The build quality is good & installing the whole thing took around a minute or two. I’ve tested it in desktop PCs with Windows Vista & XP and I have to say it works perfect. Dabs delivery time was amazing (2 days), thank you.

You get what you pay for it seems...

Case is flimsy and the harddrive isn't mounted properly inside making it move around freely. Using it to transfer data also proved to be troublesome - I got several errors in my event log on XP saying that the disk had encountered read/write problems. I moved the drive to another USB/IDE adapter and no errors whatsoever so I can only presume that the fault lay with the controller on the Startech adapter. I was using a brand new WD HDD which was scanned later to show no errors.... To surmise - cheap, tacky, inferior build quality & allows free movement of the harddrive inside the enclosure!
