Fast Drive - Great Price

This is a great drive. I bought it for a new Win 7 Pro install and I am very impressed with the performance. The price point and massive capacity make this an easy buy :-) One thing to watch out for: older Gigagbyte MBs may render the drive useless (at a 32 MB capacity). If this happens update your BIOS and restore the drive to factory settings using this tool - http://blog.atola.com/restoring-factory-hard-drive-capacity/

Awesome speed and keen price. Using 4 of them in a RAID 10 array with Ubuntu. Who needs SSD?

Brilliant drive at a great price

I purchased 4 of these for use in a new DAW configuration. I was intending to use them in a RAID setup, but I've found the performance to be so good there was no need. I'm running a big project here, one drive handling around 120 audio tracks (mono 48KHz 32bit) without any problem at all.
Very happy.

and they are still making Velociraptor ?

If you are a speed freak you would choose a Velociraptor until now. Where as this drive is a 1ms slower of average seek time(finding your data) its has 4 times the buffer space, faster internal data bus. Double the speen of the SAS to the buffer. so unless your disk is badly fragmented the 1ms difference is meaningless. The difference matter is in the order of magnitude in the Mean Time between Failures where this drive wins. I assume that WD are looking at the mechanics of the Velociraptor with a view to upgrading that to 6gbps. What is also compelling is the comparison between Fibre Channel, you would have though that it should be fast, it was when 4gbps was fast; its not just horribly expensive. This drive is quite stunning as part of a RAID set for performence. It will fit will with my 6core AMD and 1800Mhz ram.

SATA 600MB/s vs 126MB
Reviewed by . Review Posted 16/06/2010

When you are looking for the fastest disk for your next upgrade its easy to think that if its a 600MB/s interface that thats tyhe speed of the IO not so, actual IO is specified to 126MB/s. So it being SATA600 is irrelivant (ie its really SATA126). However it does have a 64MB cache and its cheap. If you compare it to a spindle of 10k rpm or 15k then they can always find data faster than a 7200rpm.
Eg look at track to track seek time and latency. If you format it with large sectors then this will get more out of the cache. You then have to look at what you are going to use if for.
The WD drive has an excellent build quality, MTBF and to get kick out of it its best to put it in a striped raid to overcome the slow RPM and yet lever its benefits.

Unreliable

Although performance is impressive, I have been plagued with reliability issues.

My first drive started to fail after only 3 months. Western Digital promptly sent out a (remanufactured) warranty replacement. This lasted 2 weeks before also staring to fail. I received a third warranty replacement which failed diagnostic tests straight out of the box. I'm not even sure I'm going to bother sending it back to get another - I've kind of lost faith in Western Digital now!

Looking at the WD forums it would seem I am not alone in experiencing repeated failures with this drive model.
