Top active external storage
Reviewed by Martin. Review Posted 03/08/2008
The MyBook Essential range is the best Western Digital do so far for USB connectivity.
The device itself is great, especially with auto-poweroff when not in use.
Unfortunatly it comes loaded with bloatware but a quick format gets rid of all that.

Great looking storage
Reviewed by Simon. Review Posted 16/03/2008
My iTunes was getting too unwieldy across 3 drives, so I was pleased to get this 1TB drive installed. It's very quiet, but transfers very fast. The software that comes with it isn't up too much, but then I'm only interested in storage!
One thing to watch out for if you use Apple TV, I have found that the drive powers down as it thinks the PC isnot using it, only to find that Apple TV then stops. Haven't found a way round it yet.
Still - 5 star product!

Western Digital 1TB My Book Essential 7200RPM USB2

Worked straight out of the box with no problems.
Very quiet and runs cool.
Only minor point discovered that automatic powering down when PC is shut down only works if dirive is connected to an on-board USB connection. As one should expect connecting to a powered hub made this feature null and void.
A bit of crawling around under the computer desk solved the problem.
If you are thinking of an external disk this is brilliant.

Doesn't work with Linux
Reviewed by . Review Posted 25/09/2008
This presents as an 'enclosure' and not as a disk to Linux, so it's only usable under Windows and MAC I guess.

Unreliable drive and unhelpful manufacturer
Reviewed by Anonymous Review Posted 16/07/2008
When I was deciding which drive to buy I looked and a number of different manufacturers and finally decided to pay more for a know manufacturer as they should be more reliable. I was wrong, I have had 2 of these now and find that they just don’t work. I’ve tried them on 2 different PCs and 2 Laptops and they either intermittently crash the machines or the drive disappears and you need to power them off back on and reboot. I’d recommend that you pick a different make. Note, Western Digital are slow, unhelpful and not interested so you’ll be stuck with it.
