Fatal overheating and crash

Having bought this model from Dabs.com in 2009 18 months later the unit crashed and burned. Western Digital suggested I have the data recovered and offered me a replacement. However, after much expense the IT expert discovered the unit contains no fan or cooling method to keep the Caviar drive at operating temperature - hence the terminal crash. Having proved the unit was shipped from Dabs.com with an inherent design fault I was told the warranty was void as I'd had the data recovered (following Western Digital's advice). The replacement unit I have been sent will make a very expensive doorstop...

Western Digital should be ashamed of selling this product. It’s incredibly slow and keeps locking up if you try and copy large files to it – not great as a backup device then. Usually runs for 2-3 days before needing the power pulled to reset, or every couple of hours if you’re using it.
I removed the hard disc and used that directly in the end.
