Excellent product

Lots already written, so just 2 comments:
1. re noise - it is not silent but to reviewer saying it is noisy, try picking it up!. The hard base can use a desk as an amplifier, place it something soft if this the case.
2. The on/off switch is perfect in that it remembers whether it it on or off when unplugged. So for people like me who use it as back up device, it stays off unless I switch it on. For those wanting it as extra normal PC storage, it will switch on & off automatically with the PC.

A life saver

A great bit of kit to back up your files when tempted with Vista....(You'll need it!) But be careful, the "Retrospect Express HD" bundled software is full of bugs. I strongly suggest you avoid using it unless your data is not important. Don't let that put you off buying this excellent drive.

Bought one as a media drive for my Mac G5. Talk about quieet. I had to put my ear next to it to hear anything at all. Fine box and only complaint is the external PSU - more to carry around...

Excellent HDD!!!
Reviewed by Matt Cox. Review Posted 25/05/2007
I got one as a friend said they are excellent and they are.
I assume the last reviewer used the convert command. We all know we have a few ways to convert this to NTFS so go and convert it how you know best. It took me about 10 minutes to copy off the software supplied on the drive, QUICK format to NTFS, copy back the original software. The drive may not autorun the supplied software if you have already run it as they write an autorun script to overwrite the original script so it only does it the once. Just add OPEN=AUTORUN\autorun.bat to the autorun.inf file in the root of your new drive. ;-) Just play with the autorun.inf file and the autorun files in the autorun folder if you always want it to try and run the supplied software.
Some ideas for you - you could install an OS on this drive or ERD Commander…
It is so fast, quiet, lots of storage, small footprint and a great looking bit of kit.
You will not be sorry with this purchase.

I own one of these HDD and it is brilliant, fast and huge amount of space. It takes 2 hours to be formated from FAT32 to NTFS but is worth it!!You can trust this brand, very good performance and it has very small and compact case which protect very well your data.
Buy it and you will not regret!!

Very good, but needs an eSATA cable and NTFS reformat
Reviewed by Ed. Review Posted 03/11/2007
The drive ships with a usb cable in the box, but it DOES NOT INCLUDE AN eSATA CABLE. While an eSATA cable can be plugged directly into a motherboard SATA connector, a normal internal SATA cable cannot be plugged into an external device (there is a good practical reason for why manufactures have done this, see wikipedia eSATA). If you intend to use eSATA you have to buy your own cable separately.
The drive is shipped formatted as FAT32. The reason for this is that all operating systems can use FAT32, whereas Linux requires a bit of messing around to get it to use an NTFS drive fully. I didn’t think I needed to reformat to NTFS. So I started copying over some files from my very full system disk onto the drive. However, I quickly re-discovered that FAT32 causes explorer to go wrong if you have a folder with over 4 gig of files in it. When you get to that folder with explorer, it asks to send an error report and closes. Windows users should reformat to NTFS straight out of the box.

Great value for money
Reviewed by Mark. Review Posted 13/08/2007
I have had it now for a couple of weeks and I’m fairly happy with it, the 500Gb hard disk provide ample space for my film collection and the ESATA connection transfers large files twice as quick as USB2. Aesthetically the WD is very pleasing to the eye, the cool looking neon glow on the front of the drive is pleasant to look at as well being a functional tool.
There are a few niggles though I would like to share, firstly the ESATA port at the back is buried quite far into the case, so if your ESATA cable has a small metal head you will find that the pins won’t quite reach the port. This is easy to remedy though just get a razor (like a flick razor) and trim few millimetres of the plastic covering the head. I not happy about the amount of noise the hard drive makes whilst its operational, other reviews have praised the drive for its acoustics I can only assume that the noise of their computers overdubbed the WD.

EMC backup is slow
Reviewed by Karl Potter. Review Posted 07/06/2007
As a drive it does look good but I tend to agree with Barney. The EMC backup does appear to have bugs, or is just very slow. I've also found that my PC boot up time has increased because of the drive. Perhaps some tweaking will improve, but I thought this would have been a better out of the box solution....

Vista and USB problems
Reviewed by John L. Review Posted 07/09/2007
Worked with my Dell PC for a while on Windows XP, but since upgrade to Vista 64-bit does not appear in "remove hardware" list so cannot be removed cleanly. Has now started giving errors. Moved to XP laptop with Intel chipset and still errors. Will test on PC at work - if it has problems there I will be returning it. It has an inbuilt USB hub so it can offer a human interface device (the button) as well as the disk. The hub gives Vista problems. Over-engineered nonsense!

Problems with drive -keeps going into sleep mode
Reviewed by Dr_Milkyway. Review Posted 14/10/2007
When in use, the drive keeps going into sleep mode, despite being in use. This apparently is a known issue with these drives. Seems to work okay for small back-ups (I wanted to use it for video editing), but I would not recommend it.
