I was lucky enough to get my hands on the Quest 3. Meta’s latest VR headset is an impressive improvement from their previous model; the Quest 2. Which honestly, I wasn’t sure was possible. After reading this, you can always head over to our Meta Quest 2 Review if you want a good comparison.

Now, in 2024, we’re no strangers to VR from experiences to headsets. With the Quest 2. launching in 2020, the PlayStation VR2 and now the Apple Vision Pro, VR is becoming more well known.

Initial thoughts. Slim profile. Maximum comfort.

After opening the box, I could visibly see the difference compared to the Quest 2. It was sleeker and more compact.

Setting it up was simple. Download the app. Follow the instructions. And in less than 10 minutes you’re good to go. Personally, where I live space is a bit limited, however, the Quest 3 was great at automatically detecting my safe exploring space, I didn’t even need to adjust it. It even alerts you if you get to close to the edge or a physical object.

The Quest 3 is light for what it is. I felt comfortable having it on for long periods of time. I had it on for over an hour I was so into my games. The strap itself is an upgrade from the Quest 2. It was so easy to put on with an adjustable velcro strap at the top to let it sit comfortably for those long periods of time.

Mixed reality

A noticeable difference from the Quest 2 is that the passthrough is now in colour, rather than black and white. I personally still didn’t think it was perfect. In low light the pass-through was pretty grainy. But I understand it’s all a work in progress and I’m sure in the next one it’ll be improved even more. It was perfect when I was playing games such as tennis and I wanted to make sure I wasn’t about to run into my candles. However, apart from that one time, I rarely went into mixed reality. I preferred being fully immersed in the virtual world.

Next-level games & fitness

With over 500 games and experiences to choose from, there’s something for everyone. Now I’m no serious gamer if I’m being completely honest. I dabble in some Hogwarts Legacy, Sims 4, Mario Kart etc but apart from that I’ve never dived headfirst into the gaming world, so this was a completely new experience for me.

A fitness app I loved is The Climb 2 (the first one was also good too, but this was better in my eyes). I love going to my local climbing centre and doing some bouldering. It’s fun and keeps you fit. I only did the free trial which was a short 20 minutes… and it felt a lot shorter because I was having so much fun. This app gives you the thrill you wouldn’t find in a safe, controlled centre but also the safety of not actually being 3000 feet in the air with no harness. But instead in the safety of my living room. It was perfect for me as a beginner (both in VR and in bouldering as I’m no pro). And don’t get me wrong, it was terrifying, but not in bad way. It felt so real, especially when I fell a couple times (good job I don’t do it in real life). It even broke me out in a sweat.

Looking around and seeing the beautiful and vast landscapes felt so real and you have plenty of them to choose from. You can also challenge yourself and move up levels if you feel it’s a little too easy. The graphics on this game are also incredible. Whether you’re a climber or not, I truly can’t recommend this game enough.

A game I also got into was Fruit Ninja. To say I felt like Katniss Everdeen is an understatement. You could choose from 2 swords, or a bow and arrow; and as a Katniss girlie through and through, it was an easy choice. I remember playing Fruit Ninja on my iPod back in the day, so it was also super nostalgic. And the whole game was an upgrade! But that’s no surprise. From graphics, to gameplay, it was so much better. I could’ve been in there for hours.

Who needs a gym membership?

Virtual workouts are the new gym membership. And I completely get why. Even just doing The Climb 2 built me up in a sweat. From baseball to tennis, boxing to Zumba, it has all the workouts you need to do. And the best part? You’re not just doing it in you living room watching a YouTube video, you’re fully immersed in it all. I mean, I played tennis at what in my mind was the Wimbledon Championships. Fit XR is a great app for fitness. With loads of workouts to choose from, you can be sure to have fun, challenge yourself and feel fit!

Be fully immersed in your favourite TV show.

With the Meta Quest 3, you get a front row seat to all your favourite shows and movies. Netflix and Prime Video are on there, so you can sit in your bed and feel as though you have a private screening. My absolute favourite though, was YouTube VR. The whole app was really well designed for the Quest 3. You could easily move the screen around, and it was a big screen at that. You could enter 360 worlds; go under the sea, head onto a rollercoaster, or go to your favourite concert. The app on the whole was super easy to navigate and sign into so you have all your usual subscriptions on there.

Final thoughts

When I first got the Meta Quest 3, I honestly wasn’t too sure what to think about it. And if you came into this review also not sure, I hope by now you’re convinced to get one. Because after having this Quest 3 for a couple weeks, I now want my own one. From climbing 3000 feet, to playing in the Wimbledon Championships, VR technology has expanded massively. It feels as though anything is possible and you can do anything. Check all the specs of the Meta Quest 3 below and enjoy your time in the Metaverse. I certainly did.
